Step 1: (a) To find the approximate least cost Hamiltonian circuit using the "best edge" algorithm, we'll follow these steps: List all edges with their costs and sort them in ascending order: A--D = 2 A--C = 3 C--D = 4 E--B = 5 D--E = 6 D--B = 7 B--C = 8 A--B = 9 E--A = 10 E--C = 11 Construct the circuit by adding edges based on the sorted list, ensuring that no vertex is visited more than once (except for the final return to the starting point) and no sub-circuits are created. A--D (2) : Add this edge. A--C (3) : Add this edge. C--D (4) : This edge cannot be added because it would create a sub-circuit with A--C--D. E--B (5) : Add this edge. D--E (6) : Add this edge. D--B (7) : Cannot add, would revisit vertices already included. B--C (8) : Add this edge. A--B (9) : Add this edge to complete the circuit. Hamiltonian Circuit : The circuit found is A--D--E--B--C--A . Calculate the Total Cost : A--D = 2 D--E = 6 E--B = 5 B--C = 8 C--A = 3 Total Cost = 24 Order (Circuit): A--D--E--B--C--A Cost: 24 Explanation: The Hamiltonian circuit A--D--E--B--C--A has a cost of 24. The circuit and cost calculations remain consistent and accurate. Step 2: (b) Nearest Neighbor Algorithm from A Start at Vertex A : Neighbors: A-B (9), A-C (3), A-D (2). Choose the closest neighbor: A to D (2). From Vertex D : Remaining neighbors: D-B (7), D-C (4), D-E (6). Choose the closest neighbor: D to E (6). From Vertex E : Remaining neighbors: E-A (10), E-B (5), E-C (11). Choose the closest neighbor: E to B (5). From Vertex B : Remaining neighbors: B-A (9), B-C (8). Choose the closest neighbor: B to C (8). From Vertex C : Return to starting vertex A: C to A (3). Explanation: Final Circuit and Cost Calculation Order (Circuit) : A → D → E → B → C → A Cost : 2 + 6 + 5 + 8 + 3 = 24 2 + 6 + 5 + 8 + 3 = 24 Step 3: (c) In reviewing both algorithms for finding the Hamiltonian circuit from vertex A, we indeed obtained the same solution in terms of both the order of visitation and the total cost. Here are the details: Results from Both Algorithms: Best Edge Algorithm : The circuit produced was A → D → E → B → C → A with a total cost of 24. Nearest Neighbor Algorithm : The circuit obtained was A → D → E → B → C → A with a total cost of 24. Explanation and Comparison: Did we get the same answer? Yes, both algorithms yielded the same circuit order and the same cost. Which approximation algorithm produced the better solution? In this specific case, both the best edge algorithm and the nearest neighbor algorithm produced an equally good solution, as they both arrived at the same circuit with the same minimal cost of 24. Explanation: This result highlights a specific instance where both heuristic methods converge to the same solution, which may not always be the case in different scenarios or more complex graphs. Typically, the performance and outcome of these algorithms can vary based on the graph's structure and the starting vertex. However, in this particular example, both algorithms efficiently found an optimal path, demonstrating their effectiveness for this graph configuration. Step 4: (d) Optimal Solution Algorithm The only algorithm that guarantees an optimal solution for finding the Hamiltonian circuit is the brute force algorithm . This method involves checking every possible permutation of vertices to find the one with the lowest total edge cost that forms a Hamiltonian circuit. Number of Hamilton Circuits to Check For a complete graph with 𝑛 n vertices, the number of Hamiltonian circuits is ( 𝑛 − 1 ) ! / 2 ( n − 1 )! /2 . This formula accounts for the fact that a Hamiltonian circuit can be traversed in two directions, which are mirror images of each other and therefore considered the same circuit. In this case, with 5 vertices: Number of Hamiltonian circuits to check = ( 5 − 1 ) ! 2 = 4 ! 2 = 24 2 = 12 2 ( 5 − 1 )! = 2 4 ! = 2 24 = 12 . Explanation: Thus, using the brute force algorithm to guarantee finding the optimal Hamiltonian circuit, one would need to generate and evaluate 12 different circuits for a graph with 5 vertices. This method ensures that the absolute minimum cost circuit is found but can be computationally intensive for graphs with a larger number of vertices. Final Answer : Part A (Best Edge Algorithm) and Part B (Nearest Neighbor Algorithm) : Both algorithms resulted in the same least cost Hamiltonian circuit starting from vertex A with the sequence A → D → E → B → C → A and a total cost of 24. This demonstrates consistency in the outcomes of both heuristic approaches for this particular graph. Part C (Comparison) : The comparison reveals that both the Best Edge and Nearest Neighbor algorithms performed equally well for this specific graph, each producing the optimal solution with the same cost and circuit sequence. Part D (Optimal Solution Algorithm) : The only algorithm that guarantees an optimal solution is the Brute Force algorithm, which requires generating and evaluating 12 possible Hamiltonian circuits for a graph
